(HOLLYWOOD, FL – December 2, 2015) – Hazen and Sawyer has named Alonso Griborio, PhD, PE, Director of Clarifier Technology.
Dr. Griborio specializes in all aspects of wastewater clarification involving primary, secondary, and tertiary optimization. His PhD work led to the development of the 2Dc Model series, which is now widely accepted in the wastewater industry. Developed at the University of New Orleans, the 2Dc Models are Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools customized for the design and optimization of circular and rectangular clarifiers. These models were a significant improvement on the traditional evaluation methods, as they allow visualization of the internal conditions in the clarifier, such as position of the sludge blanket and flow pattern. These models also incorporate the geometry and other internal features of the clarifiers. “The successful application of these models has led to significant O&M and capital savings for our clients”, said Ron Taylor, Regional Manager at Hazen and Sawyer.
“Alonso is that rare engineer who is at the forefront of cutting edge research in the CFD modeling field, but is also passionate about detailed reviews of clarifier specifications and field work,” said Dr. Paul Pitt, Director of Wastewater Process and Design for Hazen.
His recent publications include “A protocol for the use of computational fluid dynamics as a supportive tool for wastewater treatment plant modelling” and “Good modelling practice in applying computational fluid dynamics for WWTP”.
Dr. Griborio has been with the company for nine years and has worked on over 35 clarification projects, including work for NYCDEP, SFPUC, MDWASD, Broward County, JEA, Loudoun Water and Gwinnett County. He has also been actively involved in Hazen’s projects in Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Israel.
Dr. Griborio has been a chair and speaker at numerous workshops on clarifier design and optimization including the 2006 WEFTEC Workshop “Clarification in Wastewater Treatment Facilities: State of the Art”; the 2010 WEFTEC Workshop titled “Combining the Power of Whole-Plant Simulators and CFD for the Dynamic Modeling of WWTP”; and the 2012 IWA/WEF Wastewater Treatment Modeling Seminar Workshop “Fluid Dynamics: What is Good CFD Modeling Practice and What Can Be the Added Value of CFD Models to WWTP Modeling.” He also serves on several committees including the IWA Working Group on CFD and Wastewater.
