(CINCINNATI, OH – August 5, 2024) - Hazen and Sawyer has announced the appointment of Darren A. Lytle, PhD as Vice President and National Drinking Water Application Specialist based out of our Cincinnati office.

For more than 30 years with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Darren’s primary focus was researching drinking water quality. During that time, he investigated and published works on drinking water systems, focusing on distribution system corrosion control and water quality; biological water treatment approaches; filtration; EPA Contaminant Candidate List contaminant removal studies; and iron and arsenic removal.

Throughout his career, Darren has published more than 100 manuscripts and book chapters and given more than 150 presentations at professional conferences. Darren also has an extensive track record working with organizations, groups, academics, and communities, tackling real-world challenges including Flint's lead crisis, Toledo's harmful algal blooms, and Milwaukee's cryptosporidiosis outbreak.

At Hazen, Darren will continue his trailblazing drinking water research and serve as a leader within the Firm’s Drinking Water Practice. His primary responsibilities will include serving in a quality assurance role in support of Hazen’s lead and copper corrosion service area, engaging with our groundwater treatment practice, supporting the Firm’s drinking water operations group, and helping us grow our drinking water treatment innovations to continue to serve our clients’ cutting-edge needs.

“I am thrilled to welcome Darren to Hazen,” shared Erik Rosenfeldt, Vice President and Drinking Water Practice Group Lead. “We are entering a new paradigm for our drinking water clients, as they face challenges like PFAS and other emerging contaminants, groundwater pollutants like arsenic, nitrate, lithium, and chromium, and integrating reuse into their water portfolios, all while avoiding unintended consequences such as distribution system corrosion. To bring someone with Darren’s vast experience and expertise to our team will help us provide superior solutions to protect public health in our local communities.”

Darren earned his PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois, his MS in Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and his BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Akron. He has also served on numerous American Water Works Association committees, leading initiatives on many of the most pressing issues facing the water industry.
